You may have just made my day!!! The Canaan record I think is real weird (I was raised in Simsbury, so I do know the distance). Anyway, this was a huge clue for me as I could not find anything of the parents of either Desire Buttles or of Hiram Cadwell. No help at all from Barbour Collection. Finally, I received the following information:
William Henry ELDRIDGE of Twin Falls, Idaho who compiled the Thomas BUTTOLPH Genealogy in 1934 lists: "Thomas, John, David, Jonathan, Jonathan, Joel, Enoch, Desire.
Then for Desire he says "Desire, was perhaps the one who m: 27 December, 1821 at the First Church of Caanan, Conn., Hiram CADWELL, both of Granby."
This was consistant (fairly) consistant with some information found in some old letters written by my Great Aunt Myrtie, though I have also found several errors in her recollections.
Hiram and Desire Buttles Cadwell had 9 known children, including my ancestor, Hellen May Cadwell who married Aaron Holcomb.
Great Aunt Mrytie, Hellen's grand-daughter, in a letter dated April 1970, she stated, "Enoch Buttles or Buttolph was first cousin to Helen May Cadwell, Aaron's wife. Only one marriage for either of these - Aaron or Helen - 13 children. Some died in an epidemic - 3 in 2 weeks.
Then in a 25 January 1974 letter, Myrtie surmised that Enoch Buttles was perhaps the brother of Hellen's mother, Desire Buttles, or a cousin? She recalled that "Grandma used to 'run over and see cousin Enoch' for she valued her friends and relatives."
Now, if I have pieced this together right (from the leads above) then, Desire Buttles was likely to have been the Daughter of Enoch Buttles and Philetta Rice. I believe that she also also had a brother Enoch Hayden Buttles. Therefore, the elder Enoch Buttles would be the Grandfather of Hellen May Cadwell, and the younger Enoch Hayden Buttles would have been her Uncle. Possibly there was another generation having an Enoch that would have been her cousin as was Myrtie's recall? In any event, this does appear to be the correct line for Desire Buttles.
I have been following Cadwell lines all over the place. I finally located a Hiram (no birthdate, but of the right time period) the son if Isaac Cadwell Jr. with ties to New Hartford and to Canaan.
1830 census Isaac is in Granby near to Enoch Buttles? WOW!!! This could be the clue I needed. 1800 New Hartford (45-older)? Where in 1810 and 1820? This is exciting!!!
