There is an absolutely fascinating set of diary entries or letters which I found when I was looking for the "Jumna" a ship which carried troops to various engagements.
I am sorry I cannot be more specific I found the site when I put Jumna in the search engine.
The diaries/leters are from a woman who went to India as a governess but was almost immediately returned home due to death in the family. She observed a battle from the deck of a ship from memory at a port in Egypt. Perhaps not directly related to what you are seeking but great reading. she eventually became a governess to various crowned Heads of Europe's families.
hope you find it.
