I recently purchased a Victorian LS & GC Medal to Garrison Sergeant Major J.T. Mayor. Today I received his WO.97 papers found in the British National Archives, which, much to my surprise, yielded the fact that he had served with the Royal Navy prior to enlisting in the army, and had served in the Crimea with the Naval Brigade along with his shipmates from HMS Diamond, and was entitled to a Crimea Medal with clasp and a Turkish Crimea Medal.

His service details will follow - but I have to inquire if anyone on the CWF that can confirm his medal entitlement and the dates that he served in the Crimea, and, perhaps a short outline on the doings of the crew of HMS Diamond would be most welcomed.

I have to plead ignorance on things R.N. and Crimean, as my research and collecting specialization lies with the 60th Rifles - the King's Royal Rifle Corps, who weren't in the Crimea.

And finally, I suggest that it must be unusual for an able-bodied seaman to end up as a Garrison Sergeant Major on the Staff of the Army!
