Hello to the forum. I have in my possession a British 1796 light cavalry sabre that bears a silver plate on the scabbard engraved "BALACLAVA 25TH OCTOBER 1854 CHARGE". The sabre belonged to Cpl Arthur Berkleman of the 17th Lancers (I have provenance). Now clearly this was not the pattern of sabre carried during the charge but I know of 2 others with identical plates on the scabbard - one marked Thomas Tucker 17L and the other marked to the 4th Hussars. I am assuming that these sabres could have been commemorative "souvenirs" given to the survivors of the charge (perhaps at one of the banquets). My question is : Can anyone confirm whether this is so?
