Dear Helen: I just did a word search of my entire book which lists every man who served in the Light Brigade from 1854 to 1856. There was nobody named "Johns" in any of the regiments of the Light Brigade, so unless he enlisted under a false name (which did occasionally happen), he was not a member of the Light Brigade and did not charge. This is probably a family story which has gotten distorted over time. A great many people claimed to have ridden in the Charge . . . or descendants remember that they did, when actually it may be that they just served in the Crimea at the time of the Charge . . . or were in the army at that time. I have a couple of photos of tombstones where the deceased claimed to have been in the Charge, and was never there . . . Sorry, LC |
