Hello, Slim. In 1851 Douro, Peterborough, Ontario, the following Coughlins appear on page 45 of that census: Cathrine, born 1776, Ireland; Timety, born 1797, Ireland; Turniah?, born 1817, Ireland; John, born 1822, Ireland. Canadian-born: Timety, 1844; John, 1846; Patrick, 1849. I believe it likely that the John Coughlin, aged 61, Ireland, appearing in Isabella county, MI in 1880 is the same as him reported firstly. He is married to Charlotte, aged 50, born in Canada. The children at home, all born in Canada, are Michael, 20; William, 13; Agnes, 16; Catherine, 12; Margaret, 6. There is also Timothy Coughlin, aged 26, born in Canada. He is married to Mary, aged 24, born in Canada & they have a child, Katie, aged 2, born in MI. Catherine Coughlin, aged 19, marries Daniel Shehan, aged 24, 7 Jan 1888. Each was born in Ontario. Michael Coughlin, aged 28, marries Malinda Epple, aged 23, 30 May 1892. He was born in Canada, to parents John and Catherine Torpie/Torpey Coughlin. I believe it likely further research will find that Charlotte Coughlin Leahy is a child of John & Catherine Torpey Coughlin. Sadly I do not have such facts in hand.
