Alex Cotton was a little boy when his sister Luria took a shine to George W. Webb in Grant County during the 1920s.

George was the son of Mary Webb, the daughter of James Warren Webb of Polk County, AR, and Sarah Cecil. He was born when Mary was living with the family of John P. Webb in Perry County, AR.

My mother and her twin sister believed that George was actually their half brother. John P. Webb was accused of adultery with Mary Webb in divorce court in Perry County in 1919. Neither John or Mary appeared to contest the claim.

Soon after the divorce was granted, John P. Webb disappeared from Perry County with Mary and her two sons. We now know that they moved down to Grant County and bought a place south of Sheridan.

About 1925, the sawmill business slumped terribly and John P. Webb took to running a moonshine still in the woods. Like many others, he got caught and was locked up in the old Grant County jail. Facing a year in prison, he opted to break out of the jail by crawling out a hole made by loosening some bricks. He hid out until Mary could sell the place and they could relocate to the area of Tichnor, AR, in Arkansas County.

John P. Webb told the 1930 census taker that he was J.B. Webb. He began to operate a little store in a shack at Jack's Bay on the White River. The family took up residence in a small houseboat moored in a chute off the river at Jack's Bay.

George did not like that he had to leave Sheridan for the boonies. He had fallen in love with a young girl. He went back and got her to marry him. They had a baby girl that they named Betty.

Life in the wilderness was hard for Luria. She longed for her mother and father and the comforts of home. On a visit home she was killed in a violent car crash. The primary responsibility for raising Betty fell to John P. Webb and Mary. George did what he could.

Occasionally, Betty would go to Sheridan to spend time with her Cotton grandparents, whom she came to love.

George Webb, born 04-15-1908, died of a heart attack while working at the sawmill 07-02-1971 at Hatton, AR, and is buried in the Cecil Chapel Cemetery at Vandervoort, AR.
