Connelly, Shields,Eustice, etc Sometime in 2008 I located the death certificate of a John J. BYRNE who was born on the 3rd of July 1894 in Philadelphia to the parents of Francis J. BYRNE and Bridget PRYOR. John was the first born and died on the 30th of October 1899 of diphtheria. Diphtheria is an infectious disease of the throat. The certificate in this time frame was actually a “Return of a Death” filed by the physician to the Health Office with the basic information if filled out completely. It listed the parents as Francis and Bridget and they were in the 36th ward at 2253 Cross Street in South Philadelphia. Place of burial was to be New Cathedral Cemetery located at 2nd and Butler Street in North Philadelphia. Upon visiting the cemetery I was able to located the grave location as being Lot #40 in Section I. No marker or stone could be found. Upon further investigation I was able to locate the owner of the lot and those also interned there over the years. The lot is a four (4) grave lot in the name of Patrick CONNELLY. Patrick is listed in the printout as being buried on the 29th day of March 1882 being 35 years old. Catherine CONNELLY, his wife is buried on the 11th day of January in 1904. The earliest burial is that of a John CONNELLY on the 28th of April 1876 being only six (6) months old. A James CONNELLY is listed on the 4th day of October 1877 being only two (2) months old. His wife Catherine age 33, his daughter Mary age 7, sons Thomas age 4 and John age 2. John aged 2 is listed as being born in Pennsylvania, as Thomas age 4 is listed as being born in Ireland as the rest of Patrick’s family. Listed in the same household is a John SHIELDS age 45 born Ireland and Mary his wife age 46. Also listed is an Anna EUSTICE age 14 a niece born Pennsylvania. On the Death Return for Patrick R. CONNELLY of 26 March 1882 is listed an address of N.E. Corner of 20th and Wharton Streets in South Philadelphia. This is the same location that Bridget PRIOR listed on her marriage application to Francis Joseph BYRNE in 1894. Gene Blood in Norton Mass.
