Mearle Mahlon Coffey
b. 18 Nov 1910
bp. Haskell, Ok
D. Nov of 1984
dp. Salinas, Ca
1st Marriage: Syble Williams in 1928 (grandmother of author)
divorced: 1933. Had two children: Barbara Dell Coffey b. 1929 (living) and Ronal Mearle Coffey b. 1932 (living). Both adoped by L. E. (Pete) McGregor in Jan 1934 when Syble Williams Coffey remarried and took the last name of McGregor.
2nd Marriage: Geneva (last name unknown) at age 14 in Picher, Ok and they had one child: Larry, Grandma got pissed when she found out he knocked up a 14 yr. old girl which he had to marry her to keep from going to jail. I did not know my real Grandfather was Mearle Coffey, until I was about 17 yrs. old and he came to our house in Baxter Springs, Ks., with a young girl, around 1967. My mother would not let him in the house, because my Grandmother was still alive living in the same town. I have never met Larry Coffey.
3rd. Marriage: Name Unknown, but was told by Vern Coffey (relative in Salinas, Ca "she was native American" and had one daughter Pat. I would sure like to meet her someday.
Note: Mearle was in a mining accident at Eagle Picher Mines near Picher, Ok and was awarded about $400, which grandma got about $250 for back child support and the lawyer the rest, in 1940. It must have been about this time he moved to Salinas, Ca (other Coffey family was there). They probably moved there in the 30's (dust-bowl days, "Grapes of Wrath"). Poor Mearle had a bad back and ended up an alcoholic in Salinas, Ca., much like Otis on Andy Griffit show, I have been told.

Note: I have a copy of a picture of THOMAS JEFFERSON COFFEY, LAURA IBERNIA MCBRIER and their jack russell terrior standing on the porch of a small home that never seen paint. They look about 70 or 80 yrs. old. Also have a picture of Mearle Coffey standing in front of an old bat-mobile like pontiac (at about age 60) holding a jack-russell terrior.)

Vern Coffey got me most of my info about Mearle Coffey but have traced the family all the way back to HUGH COFFEY b. 1700 Ireland and died at Cowpasture River, Augusta, Va.

Just moved back to this area to be near my mom who is 80 and Dad age 89. Both doing great, just slowed down alittle. I'm not a spring chicken age 59.

Alot of my info is in storage at present, but would sure like to share what I know.
