I need help!
I have a Melvin Coffey that was born in 1823 in Jackson Alabama, married Eliza Jane Laster in 1843 in Arkansas, then went off to the Mexican war never to return. His widow remarried in 1848 in Johnson County Arkansas.
Now, looking at the 1830 Jackson Co. Census ( Melvin would only have been 3 yrs old) The only Coffey's living there then were all son's or grandson's of Nathan Coffey. The only 3 with males under the age of 5 living with them were Benjamin, Rutherford, and Joel. So I figure that Melvin would have to be a son of one of them. However I read somewhere that Absalom ( brother of Rutherford both son's of Nathan) was thought to have had a dauther named Melvina.
The Melvin who died during the Mexican War had two children by Eliza Jane before he died. a son named James Gillum Coffey and a daughter named Melvina P. Coffey.
If anyone has any information on this please contact me.
