My great, great grandfather, Marmaduke Hornsby, served as a Junior 2nd LT with Croft's Battery of the Columbus Artillery, CSA, during the Civil War. I have found his muster records along with a letter resigning his commission in April 1862. In the letter, he refers to General Order #45 of the Department of SC, GA, and FL and states he would rather resign than be reassigned. I can't find any record of General Order # 45 which I assume was issued by Gen. Beauregard. I am curious as to why he would rather resign his commission than submit to this order. Does anyone have any knowledge of this order?
