My great great grandfather, Loren Hollis, enlisted in the Wisconsin 7th Light Artillery Battery on Sept. 6, 1861 in Oconomowoc, WI as JOHN WELLs, and was mustered out on Jan 12, 1862 (date is debated) and then re-enlisted in New York as part of the 119th Infantry Regiment, company F on Sept. 4, 1862 and was mustered out on July 8, 1865 in Albany, NY.

I have found the Civil War records, the pension records...but I have been unable to trace Loren Hollis to his parents, grandparents, etc. I was hoping that someone might tell me if someone enlisted using an alias (I am assuming to get a bonus) if information had to be provided about the person, in this case John Wells, who was being replaced.

I am really stumped and would love any suggestions.

Thanks,
