I am looking for some one who could help me locate or send me in the right direction on a Henry Ostrander
Enlisted in the Army 11 August 1862 at Cheney's Grove, Illinois.
Mustered in 6 September 1862 for 3 years at Decatur, Illinois.
Fought in the Civil War - Illinois 116th Regiment Infantry - Company F.
Deserted 2o January 1863 near Napoleon, Arkansas (or on the Mississippi River). (child be born at this time)
Arrested 13 August 1863 in Marshall County, Illinois.
Mustered out 7 June 1865 in Washington, D.C.
Never returned home - family thought he had been killed in the Civil War. records show he was issued pay at muster out of the 116th in DC.
I have checked all the census records 1870 on. My belief was he was mugged and killed on his way back to Illinois.

Question.
How would Henry travel back to Illinois in 1865 and our which route.
If I could find which direction I could check some of the states.
