If you are really serious and lucky you might find him another way.
The USS St. Lewis was 175' long and a little over 50' wide so it's pretty unlikely they just pulled over to the river bank for a burial. It was also being used as the headquarters for the 28th.
Ships keep log book. The bummer is she was sunk in 1863 so the log may not have survived.
The LDS has a film of the index of logs now being in the national archives. It should be cheap and easy to see if the log book for the St. Lewis exists.
