In researching Fredrick Blessinger of Hancock Co., Indiana I learned that he served with 9th Cavlary 121 Regiment Indiana Volunteers Company B. Organized in Indianapolis 7 Dec. 1863-29 ar. 1864. left for Pulaksi, Tn 3 may 1864 attach to North Alabama Dept. Cumberland to Nov 1864. 1st brigade 7th division, wilson's cal, military division Mississippi, to Mar. 1865 dept. Mississsippi to Aug. 1865.
This is where I get hung up. I found information that this cavlary regiment (and i believe indiana 8th also) was sent to Sulpher Branch Trussel where they eventually surrendered to the confederates-Nathan Bedford Sept 24, 1865. From there whenever he was released Fredrick boarded the Sultana and his remains never recovered. I also found this regiment going to other battles after the Sept. 1865 surrender. Research shows that there were 1,000 men. 200 hundred killed 800 captured. So if these guys are prisoners how did they go onto fight in other battles?? Did I miss something?
