I have never seen anything to indicate Atherton served in the Revolutionary War. At least six of his sons are recorded as having served. They would include Squire and Atherton Jr., sons of Abigail Squire, and Clifford and Calvin and Constant and Otis, sons of Rachel Fuller.
Born in 1715, Atherton would have been past 60 when the war began. You may or may not know, his good friend, Crean Brush, was a Tory who offered his services to General Gage in Boston in the fall of 1772. That doesn't mean Atherton was of the same persuasion but is an interesting factor to consider.
In some research I did for my siblings in 1995, I found 49 individuals in the Chaffee Genealogy reported as having served in the Revolutionary War
Hope this helps.
