My line is Thomas (1), Joseph (2), Joseph (3), Joseph (4), THOMAS (5), James (6), James Herbert (7), Walter (8), Arthur (9). The Chaffee Genealogy (p. 79) assumes that THOMAS (5) preceded his father Joseph (4) in death before 1797, and that therefore Joseph's (4) male line ceased. I am living proof this is an error. I understand that the real reason THOMAS was not named in his father's will is that he had been disowned by his loyalist father for being an American Revolutionary. THOMAS (5) and subsequent generations lived in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and the spelling of our family name somehow was changed to CHAFEY. I am interested in hearing from any New Jersey Chafeys who may be out there, or anyone else who can shed more light.
