Honor S.E. Chaffee

Large Reception Given in his Honor t His Home town.

The friends, relatives and neighbors of Simon E. Chaffee of Lily Lake gathered to the number of 200 Wednesday in the new Ladies aid hall to give their honored citizen a grand farewell reception. Mr. Chaffee has had a hard tussle with pneumonia this fall and will with his family leave shortly after Christmas for California for the winter and expect to make his home in that genial climate. He has been the most prominent man in Campton, holding many public positions of trust, and has never been known to misuse the confidence of his friends. He has been town treasurer 31 years, supervisor 23 years, town clerk 10 years and milk solicitor for the Great Western railway ever since that road was built. He has resigned all these positions which he has so ably filled.

There was perhaps never a more kind regard shown for a citizen of this town than was manifested at the gathering there Wednesday. A fine dinner was served and Mr. and Mrs. Chaffee sat down with their host of friends and dined together for the last time as neighbors and residents of the same town.

Mr. Chaffee is a veteran of the civil war and was as brave and honorable in battle and camp as has characterized his subsequent career. A purse was presented Mr. Chaffee containing $100 which his friends contributed with the request that on his arrival in his new western home, he purchase what he most desired with that amount. There were thirty two relatives of the family present. John, with John Stewart & Co., bankers here, is a son of S.E. Chaffee.
I am not related to nor researching this family and have no further information.
