I'm just starting to unravel a mystery, but what I know so far is that my g-grandparents were Austrian/Bohemian immigrants who came to the U.S. and settled in northern Wisconsin. They married c. 1887, had 7+ children, and divorced in the 1910s. Family lore is that they were forced to leave the Catholic church because of the divorce. I still have a lot of unanswered questions, but I do know my g-grandfather did not have a funeral mass in the Catholic church and is buried in a public cemetery. It appears most of his family is buried in Catholic cemeteries. I think g-grandmother may have remarried, I haven't located her yet. My question is, back then were Catholics excommunicated for divorce?

BTW, their eldest daughter (my grandmother) became a Methodist but returned to Catholicism in her last years living in a nursing home.
