There isn't a lot known about Philip Carroll Sr. The name was originally spelled Carrel. Many claim he came from Germany, but I've never seen the proof. I've suspected his father came from Germany, but don't know. He married a woman named Mary in the mid 1790's somewhere in Pennsylvania. By the early 1800's he was in the Washington Co. PA area, but was into Jefferson Co. Ohio by about 1812. He originally enlisted in Washington Co. Pennsylvania to serve in the War of 1812. By 1813 he was in an Ohio unit. Somewhere I found info he came from New England to Pennsylvania. There is another Carroll (Carrel) family in the Jefferson-Harrison Ohio Co. area who came from Hunterdon Co. New Jersey. At least one veteran researcher has tried to connect Philip to that family. Philip had some daughters of whom nothing is known beyond their names & birthdates. Daughters sometimes name a son after a father. This has been a difficult family to trace since the children were split up, taken in by other families after Philip's death in 1813.
