I don't think anybody has found out for certain (from what I've read) about William's parentage. The American Indian connection has always intrigued me too. I have an old tintype of a woman who looks like an Native American, but I have no idea who she is. It was with my granddaddy's photos (Vernon Carder) and may not even be a Carder relation, but from his mother's side (McDonald). I often wish that there was a site where we could post our Carder photos so others can see/copy/save them. Actually, I think you've just given me the inspiration to do so - keep an eye out for a future posting on a Yahoo group for Carder's to share their info & photos!
