Your information:
--James J. Fay was born about 1937
--William H. Fay was born about 1938.
--Her father Harold J. Fay was born in Nebraska in 1908. He married Alice C. Cunningham in 1935? They were living in Platte, Wyoming in 1940.

Attempts to track these sons, last known to be 2 and 3 years of age; or Alice Cunningham, last known to be in Wyoming in 1940... Would be VERY difficult, without some additional facts possibly known to you or her friend.

If Alice and Harold Fay divorced at some point during the war or even after (He could have returned on furlough and began divorce proceedings at any time. Alice may have already have found a new "friend." IF, Alice and sons did go to California after the 1940 Census, she "may" have remarried and the sons adopted into the new surname. Just finding "someone" that has the name of James Fry, no matter how close in name, does NOT constitute a "finding." I didn't research the found James Fry in New York because of the "history" of that persons "finding" being WRONG.

If you have further information on "Alice," such as her actual date of birth, that would help. Otherwise, I did find a "potential" person, but hopefully you would be able to confirm or eliminate information:

The 1940 Census of "Other Places" Platte County, Wyoming, enumerated April 3.
Harold J. Fay, age 32(1907/1908), born in Nebraska, farmer, living in Goshen, WY in 1935
J. Alice C., 23(1916/1917), Wyoming
James J, 3 (1936/1937),
William H, 2(1937/1938), WY
--This information is as given by you in your posting.

The 1930 Census of Riverside, Carbon County, WY, enumerated April 5th.
Lewis Cunningham, 53, born in Illinois to father born in IL, mother in Maine, blacksmith/own shop
Florence, 48, born in IL to father born in Indiana, mother is Missouri
Alice, 13(1916/1917), born in WY.

The 1920 Census shows Alice R, age 4 5/12, the census was enumerated on 3-5 January, so this Alice born about July/August 1916. The is also a son listed, Wilmer A, age 16(1903/1904), born in WY.

There is a family tree containing Wilmer A. Cunningham Son: of Louis Aliston Cunningham, born 10/14/1876 in Summerhill, IL, died 11/20/1939 in Encampment, Wyoming; and, Florence Fanchon Cunningham, born 5/2/1880 in Perry, Pike City, IL, died 11/15/1966 in Riverside, WY. She and Louis are buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Grand Encampment, WY.
--This tree shows a sister to Wilmer, identified as "Private" with no further information (NFI). It also shows another sister, Jessie La Cunningham, born 7/21/1899 in Pleasant Hill, IL, died 4/17/1988 in Saratoga, WY. She had married Emery Earl Miller, born 6/23/1894 in Missouri, died 11/03/1968 in Riverside, California. Jessie and Emery had five children: "Private;" Wilmer E. Miller (named after her brother?), 1918 to 1 Oct 2005 in Encinitas, CA; Donald A. Miller, born about 1923 in Wyoming, NFI; Marjorie L. Miller, born abt 1925 in Wyoming, died 15 April 1942 in Los Angeles (county), CA. No spouse is identified, NFI; and, Alice Fanchon Miller, born 4 Feb 1938 in Los Angeles, CA. IS this Alice named after Jessie's sister Alice?
