Israel Dillon died in San Joaquin Co., probably Stockton, in November 1854, according to the book:
GOLD RUSH DAYS (vital statistics copied from early newspapers of Stockton, California 1850-1855 and compiled by members of The San Joaqun Genealogical Society, Stockton, CA 1958).... under the section titled:
Death Notices in "San Joaquin Republican", 1854.... Quote: " DILLON, Israel
Died in Stockton November 19, 1854, age 45, born in Iowa." From list of interments published January 21, 1855.
Israel, though suffering from ill health, left Marengo, Iowa and his family to make an extensive journey by ship around the tip of So. America to California, not to search for gold. He came to California to settle a dispute involving clear title to the land of a Iowa relative. We do not know the outcome of his venture.
Oral tradition within the Dillon family suggests that following his death, Israel may have been buried in greater Sacramento. I would be greatly for any suggestions or recommendations regarding the search for Israel's gravesite.
