Not to beat a dead horse, but…. John Bush is said to have had wives Margaret and Bridget. More specifically, they were said to be Margaret Bruce and Bridget Braxton. However, I have never seen a shred of evidence to support either surname. Does anyone have any?

(The first instance I've seen John Bush mentioned with any Bruce is the 1730 Spotsylvania Co deed to his son in law David Bruce.)

I found where John Bush was tried for murdering his indentured servant (John Sandell) in Lancaster Co in 1704. (Could explain why he soon moved to Essex Co.) In the testimony his wife is identified as "Peggy"; but then there is testimony of "Jane Bush, 32, wife of JB.” One of the witnesses at the burial of Sandell was "John Buxson." (this record is found at

It turns out there are other connections to that name:

John Bush bought land in Lancaster Co from "John Buxston" in 1703.

John Bush of Lancaster Co sued John Turner of Northumberland Co over a horse in 1698, "John Buckstone" was a witness.

John Bush's 1695 patent began at a white oak saplin on a line between Bush and "John Buckstone."

John Bush v. John Snelling (Lancaster Co, 1698) "John Buxton" was a witness.

Bottom line: I guess I'm wondering if John Bush could have married Margaret Buxton/Buxston/Buckstone(Braxton).
