New York State vital records (birth, marriage and death) are not available on the internet .... they charge about $22 US per certificate for a three-year time period search and if found an uncertified genealogical copy of same. The index for the vital records at the State Archives Department is just that .... an index showing just names, dates, places ... not an image of the original. Not all events were submitted to the State by cities, towns and villages for recording (as required by law). The advantage is that the index gives you the certificate number which focuses and hastens the process.
Since you are in the UK, you would need to have friends or relatives visiting the US search the indexes for you or hire a researcher do it (I think they charge about $20 per hour in this region). I have heard of a few but have no experience with them, and of course could not promise any results. If you have specific names and dates within say three years of an event the time spent would be very limited.
