My family comes from Bolton and have been there from at least the mid 18th Century as far as I can find. When I started looking into the family history some years ago I started by going through the BMD then sending for lots of certificates for many of the Briscoe BMD events in Bolton. One was a marriage for a Robert George BRISCOE and Lydia SPENCER on 24th July 1860 at St George's Church in Bolton. I was interested because St George's had been associated with several members of my family. When I got the certificate I found that Robert George BRISCO came from Cumberland. He described himself as a Gentleman as did his father Robert. Lydia was described just as a Spinster with her residence being Little Bolton. I did not think much about this at the time as they were obviously not related to me. ancestry have just added Cumberland to their 1871 coverage so I have been going back over my file, getting addition information on some people. I was surprised to find that Robert George and Lydia were living at Crofton Hall with his father Sir Robert Brisco (the census and ancestry are not clear whether there is the "e" on the end). I am now wondering why they married in Bolton and why Lydia was living there. 1871 gives her place of birth as Cumberland. I am not quite able to read the occupation, it looks like "Income from Devonshire ....." but that is a bit of guesswork. Does anyone know any more about her?
