Elias Brewer, wife and several children left New York alongside others for Superior, Michigan around 1826. He was a lay minister and a farmer. He married three times, firstly to Charity Barnhart, then to Jemima Mayo, and afterwards to Abigail Hayes. His children were all by his first wife. His son, Col. John Brewer and Judge Abel Parkhurst built around 1855 a church edifice unaffiliated with any denomination called the Free Church. Previously they had all been conducting services house to house. Superior had been known as the Free Church District prior to it being named Superior. The Free Church Cemetery was associated with that Church from the first settling in 1826, and is all that remains of them. Elias died in 1870 at age 89 and his son about the same time. After their deaths and the destruction of the Church building by fire the church dissipated. His ministry was long lived and to this date nearly every member of the General Assembly and Church of the First Born, and The Followers of Christ Church claim a baptismal lineage from him.
