Origin of the surname KERKEZ : - etnonym KERKEZ / ČERKEZ It denotes the name in Turkish language of the Adyghe people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adyghe_people In Serbian language in dialect spoken in Kosovo ČERKEZ is also documented in meanings village, cemetery. I would have to dig around to see when was the earliest documented occurrence in historical sources. A good post from our forum with information and referenced original sources on origin of several branches of KERKEZ families: http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en/forum/bosnia/kerkez-%C4%91%C2%90ur%C4%91evdan Serbian Genealogy Society SGS "Rodoslovlje" http://www.rodoslovlje.com/en |
