I'm researching Robert Washington Booth b. Aug. 14, 1894 in Saratoga, Howard Co. Arkansas according to his WWI draft registration. He had a brother named Thomas b. abt 1896 also in Saratoga. Robert was in Fannin Co. TX when he registered for the draft in 1917, but by 1930 was living in Sibley, Webster Parish, Louisiana. He lived there until his death in about 1970. He had a daughter Ruth and sons Jack, Bennie, Grover, and J.R., The person believed to be his brother, Tom Booth, registered for the draft in Hempstead AK, listed his birthplace as Saratoga, AK. Tom was not married then [June 1917] and indicated he was supporting his mother. I believe the Martha E. Booth who is on the 1900 census in Howard Co AK is their mother. At that time she indicates she was a widow, born Oct. 1867in AR. On that 1900 census, Martha indicates that the father of her children was born in TN. She has 7 children living with her: Jinnie F. 14, Emeline 13, Molly 10, Georgia P. 8, Bettie 7, Toby 5 and Thomas 4. Toby 's birthdate is August 1894. I think this Toby is Robert Washington Booth and his nickname is Toby. The birthdate matches up with that on his draft registration, the place is right and there are no other Booth's in that county. Other postings indicate that his parents may have been Jack Booth and Martha E. [surname unknown]. Robert Washington Booth did name one of his sons Jack. Another post on this forum shows that Martha E. Booth's daughter, Thelma Irene, had just married Andrew McIntosh in 1899 in Saratoga, Howard Co., Arkansas. Andrew and Thelma are on the prior census page to Martha E. Boothe in Howard Co. AK in 1900. On the 1910 census Martha indicates she had 8 children, 8 of who are still living. At that time, she has only 4 children still at home, Florence 22 [this must be the Jinnie F from 1900 census], Pearl 18 [this must be the Georgie P from 1900 census], Tobe 14 and Tomas 12. They are then in Garland Twp., Miller Co AK. Here Martha says her parents were b. in MO, but in 1900 she said MS.?? On the 1930 census, which is the only census where Robert W. Booth is identified for sure by that name, he indicated his mother was born in Missouri and that his father's birthplace was unknown. His wife's name was Ettie, born Arkansas abt 1897, but we do not know her surname. I don't know if there is a conncection for sure yet, but a Purley or Parley Booth, b. 1809 in North Caroliana purchased 320 acres of land in present day Howard/Hempstead area in 1860 according to Arkansas land records. He was on the 1860 census for Hempstead Co. Ar age 51, wife Nancy 37, children John 18, Palinda 16, William 14, James 11, and Nancy 4. He indicates he and his wife were born NC [his wife may have been b. TN] and all children born TN. Purley [or Parley or Peole], lived in Henry Co TN on 1840, 1850 censuses with his [presumed] brothers John Westly Boothe, Lemuel Booth, Tapley Boothe and William Booth. They are all well documented in the Henry Co./Weakly Co area of TN. His "real" name may have been Zachariah or he may have had a brother Zachariah. They were all sons of John Boothe and Martha or Patsy ? who in turn was likely the son of Daniel Booth and Priscilla Tapley of Orange Co NC. I don't know if these folks connect through the years to the Booths in Saratoga AR in the late 1890's, but it is possible, even likely. Purley had a sonJ ohn b.~ 1842. Could this be the "Jack" who married Martha? if so, he was much older than Martha, not out of range and he was born in TN. She indicated that the father of her children was born in TN. Purley also had sons William b. ~1844 and James b ~1849 and they may have had sons as well, however, they were young when they came to AR [between 1856 and 1860], so it is probably more likely that one of these 3 was Martha's husband. I'm not jumping to conclusions yet, but it would be interesting to see how Purley's land in Howard/Hempstead was transferred. Purley's wife was Nancy Owens, daughter of James Owens and sister of Robert Alexander Owens. They lived in Stewart and Henry counties in TN in the mid 1800's. |
