My Benson family in Canada (Thomas Benson, son of George Benson and Hannah Haskoll) came from Salisbury, Wiltshire, U.K. to Harbour Grace, Newfoundland in 1750 approximately. We know he married a Mary Palmer in 1760 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland so I assume he was in Harbour grace for a time before he was married. From Harbour Grace, Bensons moved to Grates Cove, and Hickmans Harbour on Random Island in Newfoundland. Many Bensons moved to Ontario and the United States over the years.

I've been researching Benson's in Newfoundland and England for over 10 years now and have met many wonderful and helpful researchers. I believe all Benson's in Newfoundland are related to this one family from Salisbury, Wiltshire.

I would love to be contacted by anyone with new information on Newfoundland Benson's and especially Benson's in Salisbury, Wiltshire. My research has shown me Benson's came from Bristol before Salisbury. They were merchants in both places. The most well know to me is Robert Benson
'''Robert Benson''' ([[1797]]-[[1844]]), lawyer ; M.A. Trinity College, Cambridge, 1821; called to bar at Middle Temple, 1821; practiced in equity courts; recorder of Salisbury, 1836. His works include, Memoirs of Rev. Arthur Collier(1837), Robert Benson and Henry Hatcher, Old and New Sarum or Salisbury, The History of Modern Wiltshire 1843.

Of Trinity College Cambridge M.A. of the Honorable society of the middle temple barristers at law, elected deputy recorder of Salisbury and afterwards by royal warrant, appointed recorder. Born in the Close of Salisbury February 5, 1797.

I have a copy of Robert Benson's genealogical journal(Domestic Memorials 1820) which makes a definitive connection between the Salisbury and Newfoundland Benson families by sighting Thomas Benson settling in Newfoundland and his subsequent marriage there.

Having said this, I would appreciate hearing from anyone in England with knowledge of a connection to the Bristol or Salisbury Benson families. I also have a web site focusing on the Newfoundland Bensons and their story if you would like to view it.
