A Francois Benoit is godfather for Charles who is born 9 April and baptised 10 April in Longueuil. The godmother is Madeleine Suprennant. The boy is the son of Charles and Felicité, domestics, negroes (slaves) belonging to Monsieur de Longueuil The parents are described on page 96 of the “Dictionnaire Des Esclaves Et De Leurs Proprietaires Au Canada Francais” by Marcel Trudel but this child is not mentioned in the book. There are other children of this slave couple. And also what happened to the couple This is a bit of a problem, 1) I could not find another Francois Benoit who is old enough to be a godfather and 2) What is Francois doing in Longueuil when he is living in Isle Bouchard. (Possibly looking for land concessions for his boys ?) At that time godparents were responsible for the child if the parents died. It could follow that a black slave could have joined the Banoit family in Vercheres. No trace there You additions or comments are welcomed.
