Daniel Bearss, b. abt 1827, PA, married, in 1865, in Kent County, MI, Cynthia Mariah Aldrich Blackhall, mother of twin boys and the recent widow of James Blackhall, lately martyred in the War against the accursed system of African slavery. In 1870, he is listed as Daniel Bears in the Federal census of Sioux City IA, a farmer, next door to a "House of Prostitution", run by a French Canadian named Jacques Chartrand, containing a 46 year old cook and three younger prostitutes, the only 3 people on the whole page who are entirely illiterate. He has with him the two sons of Mrs. Blackhall, but a new wife, Catherine E., who gives her birthplace as Canada or Ct. In 1878 he returns to Crawford County, PA for yet another wife, Anne Steel, of Wayne, Ashtabula, OH. I am not making any of this up. Who was he?
