Dear Ray,

Just ran across your inquiry re Bearse family. Of course, there are many now living decendants of Austin(Augustine) still in Barnstable as I found when I consulted the telephone book for the Barnstable/Centerville, etc. area. I tried a few years ago to find a descendant in that area interested in genealogy - but with little success.
I do know of a Bearce in Maine who does family genealogy, in fact it is the widow of Arthur Bearse with whom I had been in contact a few years ago - just before he passed away. She asks $50 down for two hours research, using her late husband's files and other sources.
Her e-mail address is: genealogy@pivot.net and her name is Ann Bearse. She has her husband's line back to Austin Bearse in Barnstable.
My mother's mother was H. Elizabeth Bearse, born in PEI. She married a John Smart in Gloucester in 1879. He was lost at sea off Grand Banks of Newfoundland in l893 when my mother was 7 years old. Elizabeth, a sister and a brother and maybe one other brother came to Gloucester from Murray River, PEI around the middle of l800's, so far as I can tell. I do know the Bearse line came originally from Barnstable but nothing in the intervening generations. Do you see any connection with your lines? Wayne Merrick

PS My Mericks came to MA in 1636 and intermarried with MANY Pilgrim and Puritan families, including some Snows (who didn't back then?)
