Lorne R. Bachelder
Lorne R. Bachelder, 84, of Smithfield Township, died on Sunday, Sept. 30. He was the husband of Hilda (Eschenbach) Bachelder, and they shared 53 years of marriage.
Born on April 22, 1923, in Rougemont, Quebec, Canada, he was a son of the late Arthur and Myrtle (Standish) Bachelder.
Along with his wife, Hilda, he owned and operated Sunset Hill Resort before retiring in 1989. For 32 years he drove the school bus for the East Stroudsburg School District. Early in his working life he worked for Provincial Transport Company in Montreal, Canada.
A World War II veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force, he served from 1942 through 1945.
He is a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Stroudsburg, where he had served on the church council.
He served as president of the Smithfield PTA. He also served as chairman of the Smithfield Planning Commission. Additionally, he was president of the Eastern Pocono Resort Association for 18 years. He is a former board member of the Pocono Mountain Vacation Bureau. He is a life member of Browne Lodge No. 24 AF & AM in Farnham, Quebec, Canada. He is a 32nd degree Mason, Valley of Scranton Consistory and a member of Pocono High 12 Club.
In addition to his wife, Hilda, he is survived by a daughter, Marian Gray of Stroudsburg; a son, Lorne A. Bachelder and his wife, Virginia; a sister, Grace Lesoine of East Stroudsburg; two brothers, Granville Bachelder of British Columbia, Canada, and Stanley Bachelder of Toronto, Canada; a sister-in-law, Helen Bachelder of Quebec, Canada; four grandchildren, Alicia Gray, Bethany Bachelder, Dakota Gray and Nathaniel Bachelder; and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to a calling period from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Lanterman and Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg, PA 18301. Masonic services will be conducted at 8 p.m. on Wednesday by the J. Simpson Africa Lodge No. 628, Free and Accepted Masons. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Prospect Cemetery in East Stroudsburg.
