William Armstrong Fairburn's "Merchant Sail" (6 vols, Fairburn Marine Educational Foundation, Inc., Center Lovell Maine 1945-1955) notes, in Vol. 1 page 415, that the brigateen "Retaliation" was the first privateer owned in Beverly, Mass. "by Josiah Batchelder, Jr. and others", commanded by Capt. Eleazer Giles. Was armed as a brig, with 10 guns and 70 man crew, and captured a British ship in late summer 1776. Was itself captured by British in late 1777, and taken to Halifax. Hope this helps.
This Josiah Batchelder Jr. is probably not the same as Josiah Batchelder (1766-1847 or his son Capt. Josiah Jr. (1795-1843) who were my family here in Phippsburg (then Georgetown), Maine.
