Bettie Florine Baskerville Cowsert 12/11/2001
September 15, 1918 - December 7, 2001 Bettie, a 5th Generation Texan was born in San Angelo, TX to Walter S. Baskerville and Hazel Magruder Baskerville. The physician at Bettie's birth was her grandfather, Dr. E. G. Magruder, historically noted for his participation with brother F. B. Magruder in forming the first TB hospital in Texas in the early 1900s.
Bettie was named after her grandmother, Bettie Ward Magruder, a writer and historian belonging to United Daughters of the Confederacy. Bettie graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas, TX, then moved to live with her aunt in College Station where she met and married A&M student Aubrey Alonzo Cowsert. Bettie had an adventurous, interesting life with very few dull moments. When her husband, Alonzo, died in 1978, Bettie found herself dealing with his death by becoming more active in the community. She was a substitute teacher in the public school system and a volunteer for 'Meals On Wheels' in Poteet, TX. She moved to San Antonio and joined the Texas Ambassador's Club and traveled to many cities and other countries. She also was a member of the 'Swinging Singles' at the Farmer's Daughter. Another pride and joy in her life were her friends at Sea World. Bettie and her friend, Al, were frequent visitors at Sea World from day one. Many of the trainers and associates of Sea World knew Bettie and Al well and always made a point of spending a few moments with them. Bettie appreciated and loved all her friends and family. Bettie is survived by her four children, Carolyn Maloney, Elizabeth Cowsert, Bettie Sue Cowsert and William A. Cowsert, who celebrate the spirit of adventure she gave them. Bettie had four grandchildren, Vickie, Scott, Cecilia and Suzanne and five great-grandchildren, James, Kaitlyn, Riley, Matthew and Christian. Bettie will be buried in Rocksprings, TX next to her husband and his family.
