Here's one for the books people...I recently met a woman dedicated to cleaning up pioneer cemetaries. She has done this in numerous states using her own money, and the donated time of people who believe in the cause. They weed, rake and place flowers on forgotten graves. She currently resides in Tombstone, AZ and is working on the city cemetery there. Apparently you can't do something nice anymore without an ulterior motive, so the marshall is preparing to serve her with an arrest warrant for "tampering with graves". This is a felony charge!! It's sad that the city allowed the cemetery of the "real" townspeople of Tombstone, (store owners and sheriffs who served the town for years) to come into such disrepair that people who have no family or friends buried there feel the need to clean it up. My husband and I have gone down and helped her weed and place flowers along with many other people from around the state. Now we're all in danger of being charged with a felony. I contacted KVOA channel 4 here in Tucson and they ran the story on the 6 and 10pm news Tuesday and again yesterday morning. I'd love to see this brought to everyone's attention. The worst part is that the "Boothill" cemetery has a sign posted that states all donations are for the upkeep of BOTH cemetaries in Tombstone. They recently stated in one of the Tombstone papers that Boothill took in $23,000. in donations in the month of April. The city cemetery hasn't seen one cent. The mayor stated that they would include the city cemetary after the new fiscal year in July. What about all the years they've been collecting money and neglected to share? Boothill is neat and clean, but a sham. Due to my genealogy research, I've spent many hours in one cemetery or another, and get angry when I see graves that have been vandalized or are so overgrown you can't even see the headstone, let alone read the inscription. If you feel this is a worthy cause, please help get the word out. This woman does not deserve to go to jail over this. What she and the group are doing is being done out of respect for someones ancestors. Who knows when one of us will need to locate someone there?
