Cathie, The BDM indexes are available in the State Library NSW which is next door to the Mitchell Library
The only way you can read full transcripts of BDMs is to get a copy of the relevant certificate
The public do not have access to the full records

There are no full census records kept but there are some electoral card indexes but they dont have much information

There are Sands directories available for the Newtown area which list names & addresses

The Sydney Morning Herald is available on microfilm at the State Library

You don't need to order anything in advance for the above

The family history section is on the lower ground floor of the State Library - from memory the SMH newspapers were located in another section but the staff will assist as they have the location on computer
