I would try for one or both of the two possible death certificates I mentioned previoulsy- by doing so and if you find him, it will list any children etc, how long he had been in Australia, cause of death, who he married, when and where (to tie in with the marriage certificate.
Not sure about any stigma- I guess sadly that it did and still does exist in some people.
Little Bourke Street, top end to Spring Street, and down about three blocks has always be known as China Town, it still exists today and is very popular with almost any one, there is a museum there, and this is their web site- I suggest that an e-mail to them, will point you in the right direction re further research etc.
I am not sure if the Church exists any more, again, get onto the Anglican website for Melbourne, send them an e-mail and hopefully they can tell you of the history etc of the Church
