I am helping my daughter-in-law Sheila "Ireland" Burke research her Family Tree. She is a descendant of Lee and Tempie Hudspeth thru their daughter Caroline. According to the 1880 census: Caroline Hudspeth was born 1887 in Drew County. Lee Hudspeth was born 1831 in Mississippi. Tempie (last name not known) was born 1841 in Mississippi. I think they were married in Drew County since all of their children were born there. I can find no trace of Lee or Tempie In the State of Mississippi. There was a Mississippi name place in Desha County, Arkansas where where the slave owner H. S. Hudspeth in the 1850 Slave Census had a male slave about Lee's age and a female slave about Tempie's age. No names listed. I wonder if the Mississippi listed as the birthplace was the state or actually the town in Arkansas. Do you have any ideas? Do you have a source for finding slave inventories by slave name? Family stories claim Tempie is a descendant of Tecumseh but so far I can not verify it. |
