Hi I'm trying to trace my great-grandfather, Henry Appleby, who was born in Lumley aorund 1874-1979. I have a record of Applebys in Little Lumley, with a Henry, from the 1891 census (ref RG12/4119), that lists a Thomas Appleby, aged 55, son Thomas (and his wife Mary), and som James (aged 20). I have been unable to trace a birth certificate for Henry (I suspect he said he was younger than he was when he enlisted in the British Army into the 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Bn Northumberland Fusiliers; he was killed on 1st July 1916, apparently at the age of 37). My great-grandfather's army details state he was born in Lumley. If anyone has any details or links to these Applebys, it would be great to hear from you. Grahame |
