•Note:
There is a grave marker in Moody's Chapel Cemetery in Altoona, Etowah Co., Alabama for Thomas Nails Brothers. It says: Pvt NC Militia Revolutionary War 1760-1837. This is a relatively new marker placed by the military at the request of a family member who has basic facts about the soldier. Does anyone know who requested this marker and where they got their info? Was there an original headstone? The gravesite must have been moved from somewhere else, because the cemetery was founded well after Thomas' death (probably 50 years or so after). I think Thomas is the key to Caleb Brothers (SC,AL,AR) parentage. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I also found a Surveyors map Family History Center Film 22611, Vol 38 p 55: Stating the following: "S Carolina, I do hereby certify for Thomas Brothers a tract of land containing three hundred and ninety nine acres surveyed for him, the 2 November 1813. Situate in Colleton District, St Georges Parish-Dorchester on Tenors Branch water of Cypress Swamp and hath such shape, form, mark, buttings and boundings as above plat represents given under my hand this 12 November 1813. William Clark Surveyor General, Nathaniel Lawrence, Deputy Surveyor"------ It has a diagrahm and the land is surrounded by small amt of vacant land, John Giohany??, more of Thomas Brothers Land, Mr Ervins Land, PhilipGrohams land. The names are hard to read on my copy from the microfilm.

1 NAME Caleb /BROTHERS/
2 GIVN Caleb
2 SURN BROTHERS
1 SEX M
1 NOTE Caleb was in the South Carolina militia during the War of 1812. His first wife is believed by Anna Wayne to be a woman by the surname of Brison. Caleb was living in Laurens County, SC, and there were many families with this name in that area, and a son was named Brison. By 1820, they had settled in Greasy Cove, Alabama in the western part of Etowah County. He was the first settler in the area.

At least one source believes his known children to be: Israel, Brison, Celia (Seleah), Isaiah, Adolphus, Terrell Daniel, William Roland, Hugh Allen, Rhoda, Julianna (Johanna), James I, and possibly Joseph M.

In the 1820 St. Clair Co, Al census, Caleb listed himself and his wife as over 21. Also living with him were 3 sons under 21 and another female over 21; for a total of 6 in his household. (**One source believes one of these females could be his mother)

**Gilbert R Brothers believed Caleb, Ezekiel and Phillip Brothers to all be children of Thomas Nails Brothers (who is buried in Al). He also stated that Philip married a cousin of Sam Houston and that his father was poor and indentured all his sons. He believed most of the TN Brothers to be related. He also stated that of the Colleton District, SC Brothers, he knew little except that Martha Jane Sawyer, daughter of Thomas and Lavinia Brothers was born 7 Jun 1813 and is listed in the 1830 Montgomery Co, AL Census with one male and two females living with her. (in a letter dated 19 Jul 1990). At one time, Gilbert has spoken to one person who believed Caleb and Ezekiel to be the sons of a Cloc Brothers of Spartenburg Co, SC Census of 1800.

He mentions that Thomas Nails Brothers could be the Thomas Brothers of the 1790 Pasquotank Co, NC Census. He believes Caleb and Philip to be relatives though he had no proof as of March 1990.**
