I've posted this also in the Thompson forum.

Thompson, Richard born in Dublin, Ireland, served as a soldier in the English Army for several years. Came to America and served as drum major under Gen. Washington in the Revolutionary War. Also under Gen. Harrison in War of 1812. Died in the year 1826 in Delaware Co, Ohio aged 95 years (Roster 1:367) wife Rebecca, d 1852, aged 90 yrs.

Appears to have been Richard William (Willy) Thompson. Might be son of Hugah Thompson. May have been found in the records from Valley Forge as Fife Major.

"VA02655, Thompson, Richard, VA, Fife Major, 5th VA Regiment, Rank Fife Major, Rank Type NCO, 1st VA Brigade, Company Fauntleroy, 5th Division. Remarks: 'No record between Nov 1777 when he was on furlough and April 1778 when he was with his company.'"

Came to Ohio in 1808 and settled in Delaware County (according to 1880 county history as a squatter). Accompanied on the move to Ohio by wife Rebecca born about 1762 (obviously a second wife), son Stephen born about 1765 and his wife Rachel (and three young children) and daughter Sybble born 1771 and her husband Joseph Beecher. Richard Thompson enlisted for the War of 1812 at age 81 and was named Master Musician for Grand Camp, William Henry Harrison's camp at Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

I am working on township history and appropriate recognitions for veterans and early settlers. If this man was truly drummer for George Washington, he should have more recognition than a simple 1776 marker. Can anyone help me? Does anyone have any information about this Thompson family? Richard Thompson is in the DAR list of veterans.

DAR - born 1741, Dublin, Ireland, state Virginia, Rank Fife Major, served under Captains Burges Ball, Thomas Gaskins; Colonels Josiah Parker, John Nevill, Charles Scott; wife Rebecca Lee, died 1836, Delaware County, Ohio (birth and death dates are wrong, but the line of descent is through Stephen Thompson (grandson) and Matilda Ritter Thompson)

Thank you for any help you can give me! Vicki
