I actually have Mary's date of death listed as February 27, 1849. I believe this is correct as her youngest child, Joseph, was not born until 1847. John married Mrs. Sarah A. (Dickey) McGahan, Novemebr 14, 1850.

Interestingly, Joseph Alter (the child), appears to be listed three times in the 1850 Federal Census. On September 11, he appears in the houshold of his widowed father at Allegheny County, PA. Yet, on September 3, he was listed in the household of his McCutcheon grandparents in Westmoreland County, PA. Then, on September 21, he again appears with his grandparents, but this time bac at Allegheny County.

His older brother, David, appears twice. First, he is listed with his uncle John McCutcheon in Westmoreland County (Sept 3) -very near his grandparents' home; and then again with his father in Allegheny County (Sept 11)
