Harper set up his trading post at Fort Selkirk in 1888 (see The Reminiscences of Capatain Billie Moore, by Will Chase). His wife was Seentahna, a Koyukuk Indian. They had eight children, the last of whom was Walter Harper, first to summit Mt. McKinley; Walter died on his honeymoon in 1918, in the wreck of the Princess Sophia (see Gold Rush Women by Jane Haigh and Claire Rudolf Murphy).
