Hi, I was told that I have Native American in my blood lines. I was told that Great great grandfather Amity Dean was full blooded Native American, which would make my great grandmother Sarah Amanda Dean 1/2 Native American. At first I was told I was Cherokee, but then later I was told I may have Delaware Indian or Lene Lenape Indian in me as I am from NJ.
I can find Amity and Sarah Amanda Dean in the 1895 NJ Census and all the federal censuses after that. I am unable to find Amity Dean in the 1860, 1870 or 1880 census. I did find a Michael George Dean born in 1889 to Amity Dean. What I am wondering is could or would they have a Native American name prior to 1889 that they may have been listed under and if so, how would I go bout finding information on that? He is listed as "White" on the censuses, but I know that info is not always accurate.
I was told he died in 1941 or 1942 in Morris County, NJ, but when I sent for a death certificate, the state of NJ could not find one for him. So I was unable to get his parent's names or any other info on him.
Thank you for any help on this. Stacy
