I am at a stand still with my searching and would appreciate any opinions about my situation.
I have done all the basics and through stories of even 2nd cousins the story is pretty much the same. That we have native blood in us and from the same area of my family, which is my great-grand parents.
I located my ggf through his lifetime by census only. There are no birth, marriage or death records on him and in his census he states that his parents are born in Italy. For a time I dug very hard to make sure that this wasn't the case. I am now pretty sure he ISN'T Italian but was Native American and said he was Italian to live more easily.
He was born in New York in arpil of 1858, lived in Corning City, New York (ward 4) which is a high Iroquois traffic there through Painted Post NY (Note: also close to Italy NY) and then moved to Muskegon MI. His wife was Louise Peck and I have found nothing on her. She is supposed to be half Wyandotte also, so that may be why her info is also hard to find. Not as deep into her yet but from what I have seen it is very possible.
How do you track anyone that has changed from their Native name to an English name? How many Native children were living in an orphanage?
Any information you can give to me about typical living conditions for Native's during this time or any suggestions are greatly appreciated. If I did a blood test would that tell me anything more as far as what type of Native blood?
