Here are the details from the Hatherleigh parish records at the DRO. I have only spent a couple of hours there looking for 'Abells', as I have only recently discovered my gggrandmother's maiden name. Elizabeth Abell b. 31.12.1829 in Hatherleigh, married William Baker of Exeter, in Exeter in 1854. (GRO records ref. 5b 207). Elizabeth's siblings were as follows and were all born in Hatherleigh: Israel, b. 1825 Ann, b 29.12.1827, married 1. Robert Perry in Plymouth in 1846. Robert died in Stoke Damerel in June 1855. Ann married 2. Henry Matthews in December 1856 in Plymouth. Mary, b. 1835 Jane, b. 1828 Henry, b. 1.12.32 Elizabeth's parents were William Abell, b. 29.4.1799 in Hatherleigh and Mary Mounce Richards, b. 1795 in Petrockstowe. They were married on 22.12.1819 in Black Torrington parish church. (copy of marriage certificate). William died in June 1873 and Mary in Sept. 1883. So far, I have found only one sister for William. This was Ann, who was born on 23.9.1805. William's parents were Israel and Mary Abell. Israel was b. 18.10.1768, but no details yet for Mary. Israel's siblings were as follows: John, b. 25.11.1770 Ann, b. 10.5.1772 Joseph, b. 10.10.1773 Mary, b. 25.10.1776 Richard, b . 7.4.1778 Jane, b. 10.7.1785 (big gap, could be others). Israel's parents are listed as Israel and Mary Able in the records. Note the change of spelling. That's where my research had to stop for that day. While going through the parish register of Hatherleigh for marriages, I noted the following: Richard Abell married Anne Ellacott on 20.2.1764 John Abell married Christian Brook on 22.4.1794 Richard Abell married Rebecca Netherway on 8.1.1797 Henry Abell married Jane Bowden on 5.4.1795 Joseph Abell married Ann Abell (?) on 3.1.1858 Richard Abell married Grace Lane on 22.5.1820 Israel Abell married Jane Saunders on 6.1.1824 John Abell married Sarah Arnold on 9.5.1828 Also, from the births, Israel Able, b. 1746, the son of Henry Able and Joan Netherway (don't know where he fits in yet). I will be returning to the records office in the next few weeks and will find your Ann, b. 20.4.1755. I shall take a note of all the Hatherleigh Abells from the beginning of the records and try and sort them out!
