Warrosquyoake Shire VA was renamed Isle of Wight Co VA in 1637. In 1749 the portion of Isle of Wight Co VA west of Blackwater River became Southampton Co VA. Later part of Nansemond Co VA (now the Independent City of Suffolk) was added to Southampton Co VA.
There seems to have been a relationship between Arthur Taylor of Tar River and the Thomas Taylor/Harris Taylor family of Surry Co VA: Margaret (Gray?) married Thomas Taylor, who died before 1720; they had at least one son, Thomas Taylor; she remarried to Major William Harris who died before 12 Apr 1721; her son Thomas Taylor had a son named Harris Taylor who was named as grandson in the Will of William Harris (as was his father Thomas Taylor); William Harris also left land to his granddaughter Mary which was to go to her husband Thomas Taylor upon her death (which possibly meant that William Harris’ granddaughter by a previous marriage married the son or grandson of Margaret Gray? Taylor, his second or later wife). Margaret (Gray?) Taylor Harris died between 7 Jun 1721 and 20 Sep 1721. She owned property in Virginia and England and was living on Lawnes Creek at the time of her death, on Pagan Shore which at one time was the northern boundary of Isle of Wright Co VA and later part of Surry Co VA (the northeast corner of Surry Co VA bordering Isle of Wight Co VA). In the records below, Arthur Taylor who moved to Tar River NC owned land adjoining a Thomas Taylor and sold land to Harris Taylor. The will of this Thomas Taylor (7 Aug 1754, 14 Nov 1754, Southampton Co VA) showed . . . son Harris . . . daughter Elizabeth Strickland . . . James Strickland and Hermon Strickland sons of John Strickland . . .
Richard Braswell (the 1st) was the grandfather of Arthur Taylor’s wife, Ann Strickland; Jacob Braswell (neighbor of Arthur Taylor) was her uncle, son of Richard Braswell (the 1st) based on the citation above:
The Will of Richard Braswell (the 1st), 28 Jul 1724/5, Isle of Wight Co VA . . . 4thly I Give unto my Son Jacob Ten Shillinggs worth and no more at present . . . 7thly I Give unto my Daughter Ann Strickland Ten Shillings worth and no more at present. (Jacob Braswell owned adjoining land to two Arthur Taylor patents on Tar River, 1753 and 1761; Ann Braswell Strickland was the wife of Matthew Strickland Jr and the mother-in-law of Arthur Taylor). Grants showed Richard Braswell owned land on Tar River (Edgecombe Co NC) on 21 Feb 1738 and on Sapony Swamp (current day Nash Co NC) also on 21 Feb 1738. A 20 Nov 1739 grant showed Jacob Braswell with land adjoining another grant on Tar River (Edgecombe Co NC). A 16 Mar 1743 grant to Jacob Braswell was for 160 acres in Edgecombe Co NC, on the south side of Tar River joining above Greens Path and on the river side; Jacob Braswell sold this land, on the south side of Tarr river above Green’s path, to Joseph John Clinch on 26 Feb 1745 (Arthur Taylor was a witness); the Will of Arthur Taylor (9 Aug 1765, Oct Court 1765) gave to Grandson John Taylor a tract of land on the south side of Tar River in Edge. County on Green’s Path purchased of Christopher (Clinch), containing 160 acres. Grants and deeds showing Jacob Braswell (or Jacob Braswell Jr) with land adjoining Arthur Taylor were dated: Oct 1753, surveyed 19 Jul 1751; 20 Jan 1765; and 20 Jul 1765.
Arthur Taylor on 14 Jul 1730 witnessed the Will of Matthew Strickland (Isle of Wight Co VA 14 Jul 1730, 25 Oct 1730) with Joseph Strickland and Matthew Cooper (on 13 Feb 1755 Arthur Taylor of Edgecombe Co NC sold 75 acres in Southampton Co VA which, according to an abstract, Joseph Strickland sold to Arthur Taylor on 24 Feb 1728; it was apparently the 22 Feb 1724 patent, Isle of Wight Co VA, to Joseph Strickling, 75 acres of land on the east side of Tarraroe Creek, adjoining land of Joseph Lane. A 13 Aug 1761 survey (Edgecombe Co NC) showed land adjoining Joseph Strickland and Arthur Taylor and on 1 May 1762 Arthur Taylor owned land adjoining “old Joseph Strickland” in Edgecombe Co NC.
Arthur Taylor on 13 Jul 1742 (Isle of Wight Co VA) bought from Arthur Powell 83 acres on the south side of Sweat House Swamp being part of a patent granted Nathaniel Powell, witnessed by William Bynum, John Edwards, Robert Pittman (Benjamin Taylor, son of Arthur Taylor, sold this 83 acres on 3 Apr 1769, described as adjoining William Bynum). The Arthur Powell grant was 17 Aug 1725, Isle of Wight Co VA, 235 acres on the north side of Meherrin River and on both sides of Sweat House Swamp
Arthur Taylor, Faith Taylor and William Bynum, 1742-1743
Arthur Taylor was recorded with William Bynum on 13 Jul 1742 (adjoining land), 8 Nov 1749, Nov Court 1749, 5 Aug 1751 (adjoining land) and 9 May 1757; and with Drury Bynum on 13 Feb 1755; his son Benjamin Taylor was recorded with Benjamin Bynum on 3 Apr 1769. On 5 Nov 1743 the Will of Simon Everitt was witnessed by William Bynum, Elizabeth Bynum and Faith Taylor (Proved 12 Mar 1746/47, Isle of Wight Co VA). Arthur Taylor on 13 Feb 1755 bought and sold (same date) a patent adjoining a Simon Everitt (Jr).
Arthur Taylor prior to 30 Mar 1743 owned the adjoining land below (which was possibly the 75 acres above, the 83 acres above or the 150 acres he sold on 10 Feb 1757, below):
The land of Arthur Taylor adjoined the patent to Thomas Taylor, 30 Mar 1743, in Isle of Wight Co VA, 330 acres on the east side of Tarraroe Creek and on the north side of Meherrin River, on Beaverdam Swamp.
The “Descendants of William de Stirkelaunde” suggests, as I read it, that there was a record that showed Arthur Taylor was married to Ann Strickland in 1744 (I would like to know).
In 1749 the portion of Isle of Wight Co VA west of Blackwater River became Southampton Co VA.
Arthur Taylor on 8 Nov 1749 witnessed a deed in Southampton Co VA between James Bass and Mary Bass (of Southampton Co) and John Thorp; sold to John Thorp land (no acres) on the south side of three creeks, a corner of Charles Bass Jr, to the head of the north prong of Herbert's Branch, to the Rock Branch, to Henry Ivey's line; witnessed also by Jas Ridley and Wm Binum (see William Bynum Nov 1749 below).
Arthur Taylor in Nov 1749 first appeared in Edgecombe Co NC records and appeared in both Edgecombe Co NC records and Southampton Co VA records 1749-1757:
In Nov Court 1749 (Edgecombe Co NC) William Bynum, Colony of VA, planter, gave to Thomas Pitman, Edgecombe Co, planter, in trust (a slave), sale void if William Bryan shall pay to Arthur Taylor (costs) (William Bynam and Benjamin Bynam witnessed the Southampton Co VA deed of Arthur Taylor, of Edgecombe Co NC, to Thomas Turner on 9 May 1757). Arthur Taylor was not necessarily living in Edgecombe Co NC in Nov 1749.
Arthur Taylor on 5 Aug 1751 patented 185 acres, Southampton Co VA, on 5 Aug 1751 on the north side of Maherin River, corner of William Bynum's, adjoining Richard Gay, Joseph Garner, James Brooks and Powell’s Branch (on 3 Apr 1769 Benjamin Taylor, of Edgecombe Co NC, son of Arthur Taylor, sold to John Drake land, a patent to Arthur Taylor, 185 acres dated 5 Aug 1751 in Southampton Co VA).
Arthur Taylor on 8 Nov 1753 won a dispute over 190 acres on the north side of the Meherrin River in Southampton Co VA against Margaret Sweat, her daughter Margaret Jeffries (Margaret Jeffreys below), her husband William Sweat and Francis Locus and wife Hannah, heard at the Council of Virginia on 8 Nov 1753 (Arthur Taylor patented this land on 24 Jan 1756, 190 acres).
Arthur Taylor on 13 Feb 1755 patented 450 acres in Southampton Co VA on the north side of Maherin River, beginning by the side of Tarraroe Creek adjoining Simon Everih, John Mackmiel (Arthur Taylor, of Edgecombe Co NC, sold Southampton Co land on 13 Feb 1755, 450 acres on the south side of Tarraro Creek adjoining Simon Everitt, John McMail).
Arthur Taylor on 13 Feb 1755 (of Edgecombe Co NC) sold to Thomas Turner on 13 Feb 1755 in Southampton Co VA, 75 acres where said Arthur now lives near Tarraro Creek and Joseph Lane (Joseph Strickland sold this on 24 Feb 1728); and 450 acres on the south side of Tarraro Creek adjoining Simon Everitt, John McMail, Margaret Jeffreys and Arthur Taylor, patent by said Arthur on 5 Aug 1751, witnessed by John Person, Michael Blow and Drury Bynam (from an abstract). It appears the 75 acres above the same land as the 22 Feb 1724 patent (Isle of Wight Co VA) to Joseph Strickling, 75 acres of land on the East side of Tarraroe Creek, adjoining land of Joseph Lane.
On 24 January 1756 to Arthur Taylor, patent, Southampton Co VA, 190 acres on the north side of Meherin River, beginning at the head of Aarons Branch, adjoining Arthur Taylor’s other land (he sold 100 acres of this on 16 Jul 1756, 90 acres on 9 May 1757).
On 16 Jul 1756 Arthur Taylor (of Edgecombe Co NC) sold Harris Taylor 100 acres adjoining Aarons Branch, said Harris, Thomas Turner and Tarraroe Pocosin (patent on 24 Jan 1756, 190 acres), Southampton Co VA.
On 9 May 1757 Arthur Taylor (of Edgecombe Co NC) sold to Thomas Turner 90 acres in Southampton Co VA adjoining said Arthur, witnessed by John Wilkinson, William Bynam and Benjamin Bynam.
The records above indicate Arthur Taylor was at least 21 years old in 1730 (born in/before 1709) and that he bought and sold land in both VA and NC until about 1757 when he apparently moved permanently to Edgecombe Co NC on Tar River (now part of Nash Co NC).
The following record might also have been for the same Arthur Taylor:
On 10 Feb 1757 Arthur Taylor sold James Barham 150 acres (in Southampton Co VA) on the south side of the Nottoway River adjoining the main road to John Foster’s line and Charles Barham, part of a tract which John Foster purchased of Joseph Holt on 23 Sep 1728 and which John Foster divided (devised) in his will to Arthur Taylor (a relative). There was a 23 Feb 1735/36 (28 Sep 1736) Will of John Foster (Isle of Wight Co VA), land adjoining Charles Barham, estate appraised by Thomas Holt, Charles Barham, Thomas Phillips, 27 Dec 1736, but abstracts did not mention Arthur Taylor. (Also on 10 Feb 1757 Arthur Foster, son of John Foster in John Foster’s will, sold James Barham 150 acres on the south side of Nottoway River adjoining John Foster and said James Barham part of a larger tract purchased by John Foster of Joseph Holt 23 Sep 1728, devised by John Foster to Arthur; the John Foster in the land descriptions above was probably John Foster Jr, son of John Foster in John Foster’s will; there was a patent to Joseph Holt, 30 Apr 1716, Isle of Wight Co, 615 acres on the south west side of Nottaway River, beginning at the mouth of the three creeks, on the south west side of Nottaway River)
I do not know how many acres Arthur Taylor received from the estate of John Foster above (although he and Arthur Foster both sold 150 acres to the same person on the same day).
In Oct 1753 Arthur Taylor patented 749 acres in Edgecombe Co NC in Edgecombe Parish on the north and south sides of Tar River joining Dickersons Corner, Hilliards line, Wells corner, a branch, Braswell’s supposed line and Jacob Braswell; surveyed 19 Jul 1751, sworn chain carriers Edward Sherrad (Sherrod) and Benjamin Taylor, surveyor James Conner (96 acres on the south bank of Tar River, the balance on the north bank); Benjamin Taylor above was the son of Arthur Taylor and would have been at least 14 years old to have been a sworn chain carrier on 19 Jul 1751, born in/before 19 Jul 1737 (__).
Arthur Taylor on 1 Aug 1761 (according to a later deed of sale) was granted 700 acres in Edgecombe Co NC on the north (or north and south) banks of Tar River adjoining Long Branch and Jacob Braswell. A deed dated 20 Jul 1765, recorded Apr 1767, Arthur Taylor to Edward Ballard, 75 acres beginning at Jacob Bracewell's corner on the north side of the river then by said line north 16 east (80) poles to a pine then by another of said Bracewell's lines north 75 west to the Long Branch then down said branch to the river then down the river to the beginning, being part of a patent containing 700 acres granted to Arthur Taylor by Earl Granville 1 Aug 1761, signed Arthur Taylor; witnesses Edw Moore, John Taylor, Catherine Vading --- the same or related deed was 20 Jan 1765, recorded Apr 1767, 25 acres beginning at Jacob Braswell's corner a red oak on the north side of Tar River then by said line north 16 east (20 poles) to a pine then by another of said Braswell's line north 75 west to the Long Branch then down the said Long Branch to the river then down the river to the beginning, signed Arthur Taylor, witnesses Edwd Moore, John Taylor and Catharine Vading.(The Will of Arthur Taylor (9 Aug 1765, Oct Court 1765) gave son Kitt (Christopher) - tract of land on the south side of Tar River also known as the Batts Plantation (Long Branch also mentioned). The plat and courses of a tract of land belonging to the heirs of Christopher Taylor deceased (31 Dec 1820) with plat maps showed his estate bordering and west of Long Branch.
On 1 May 1762 lands of Arthur Taylor and “old Joseph Strickland” were adjoining land surveyed for Edward Moore (Lazarus Strickland a chair carrier); Lazarus Strickland
purchased land from Edward Moore on the east side of Bear Branch adjoining Arthur Taylor, 130 acres on 10 Dec 1763 (from internet posted family research). In Nov 1761
Lord Granville granted 760 acres to Robert Vick in Edgecombe Co on south side Toisnot Swamp joining Joseph Strickland, Arthur Taylor and a meadow, surveyed 13 Aug 1761, witnesses/chain-carrier Lazarus Strickland. On 10 Dec 1764 Edward Moore sold Lazarous Strickland from Moore's patent May 1, 1762, 130 acres east of Bear Branch adjoining Arthur Taylor's old line, "it being the land Strickland now lives" (from internet posted family research).
The Will of Arthur Taylor (9 Aug 1765, Oct Court 1765) showed children 1. Martha Taylor Dew; 2. Benjamin Taylor; 3. James Taylor; 4. John Taylor (also a grandson named John Taylor); 5. Drewry Taylor; 6. Priscilla Taylor; 7. Kitt (Christopher) Taylor; 8. Sally Taylor; 9. Moll Taylor; 10. Ann Taylor; and 11. Wilson Taylor.
Edgecombe Co NC Court records, Oct 1766, showed: Wilson Taylor, orphan of Arthur Taylor, came into Court and chose John Taylor, his brother, as guardian who was approved. He accordingly entered into Bond of f500 with Duncan Lamon and Edward Moore, securities. John Taylor was appointed guardian to Celia, Drury, Molly and Kit Taylor, orphans of Arthur Taylor, and entered into bond of f500 for each child. (In Oct 1766 John Taylor was at least 21 years old (born in/before Oct 1745). Wilson Taylor, Celia (Priscilla?) Taylor, Drury Taylor, Molly Taylor and Kitt (Christopher) Taylor were not yet 21 in Oct 1766, all born in/after Oct 1745.
Benjamin Taylor (son of Arthur Taylor) of Edgecombe Co NC on 3 Apr 1769 sold to John Drake of Southampton Co VA two parcels of land containing in all 218 acres in Southampton, part of two patents: one granted to Nathl. Powell and bounded on Sweathouse Swamp, Powel's Branch, adjoining Wm Bynum, Richard Gay's line (83 acres); the other granted to Arthur Taylor for 185 acres 5 Aug 1751 up said Gay's line, adjoining corner of James Brooks, corner made by Drake and John Barrow, Benjamin Crocker, on Powel's Branch, on Sweathouse Swamp; witnesses Benjamin Bynum, Will Turner, John Taylor, signed Benja (BT) Taylor
The following record was probably for the son of Arthur Taylor (John Taylor) and today would be in or bordering Franklin Co NC, which was created from Bute Co NC in 1779, on the border with Nash Co NC: on 24 Feb 1772 Robert Vick (Edgecombe Co NC) sold to John Taylor 700 acres on Joseph Strickland’s line and on Arthur Taylor’s line, being a grant by Earl Granville to said Robert Vick 3 Nov 1761, and 100 acres to the Bear Branch in Arthur Taylor's line, being a tract which said Robert Vick "had of Edward Moore" (Joseph Strickland was recorded in Bute Co NC in 1769).
