Hopley Yeaton and family

This is what is known of the family of Hopley Yeaton. In a separate message I will discuss his probable parentage.


First Generation

1. Hopley YEATON. Born abt 1739. Hopley died in Lubec, Maine on 12 May 1812; he was 73. Occupation: Mariner; Ship痴 Master.

Wtinessed the will of Nathaniel Sargent of Portsmouth in 1760 NHSP 37: 31-35.

On 15 Nov 1766 when Hopley was 27, he first married Comfort MARSHALL, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.1 Born abt 1745 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Comfort died in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on 29 Jun 1788; she was 43.2

Daughter of George and Thankful (Weeks) Marshall

They had the following children:

On 26 Sep 1789 when Hopley was 50, he second married Elizabeth GERRISH, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.3

2. John YEATON. Born in Oct 1769 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Christened on 13 Oct 1769 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.4 John died in At Sea in May 1791; he was 21.5

3. Mary YEATON. Born in Aug 1772 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Christened on 29 Aug 1772 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.6 Mary died in Wakefield, New Hamsphire on 8 Nov 1852; she was 80.

On 5 Jan 1804 when Mary was 31, she married William SAWYER, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.7 Born on 26 Oct 1774 in Westminster, Massachusetts. William died in Wakefield, New Hamsphire on 5 Jul 1860; he was 85. Education: Harvard Class of 1800.

4. Hopley YEATON Jr. Born in Aug 1775 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Christened on 20 Aug 1775 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.4 Hopley died in 1776 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

5. Hopley YEATON Jr. Born in Oct 1777 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Christened on 16 Oct 1777 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.4 Hopley died aft 1819; he was 41. Occupation: Professional Soldier.

On 7 Jan 1817 when Hopley was 39, he married Sarah COOK, in Portsmouth, Virginia.8 Sarah died on 15 Mar 1825 in Norfolk, Virginia.9

6. George YEATON. Born in Apr 1779 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Christened on 4 Apr 1779 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.4 George died in Demarara, Maine in Dec 1803; he was 24.10

7. Samuel YEATON. Born in Oct 1782 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Christened on 5 Oct 1782 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.4 Samuel died in 1783 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

8. Samuel YEATON. Born in Aug 1784 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Christened on 24 Aug 1784 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.4 Samuel died in Wakefield, New Hamsphire on 24 Apr 1849; he was 64.

Jones gives this family 3 more children.


On 20 Apr 1811 when Samuel was 26, he married Sally B. DOW, in Wakefield, New Hampshire.11 Born abt 1790.

They had one child:
              i.       Enoch Dow (1815-1893)

As you can see, Hopley had only two sons who lived to have children: Hopley, Jr. who moved to Virginia and Samuel who died in Wakefield, NH. Although Hopley himself moved to Maine, his children did not remain there. He certainly had no son named William and therefore Capt. William Yeaton born circa 1788 and later of Isleboro cannot be his direct descendant.
